Discovered: The remains of Alfred the Great’s Granddaughter, Eadgyth – A Saxon Queen

Eadgyth, pictured above with husband, Holy Roman Emperor Otto I,  was one of the oldest members of the English Royal Family have been unearthed in a tomb in Germany yesterday, British archaeologists involved in the find hailed it as ‘one of the most exciting historical discoveries in recent years’. The bones have now been brought back to Eadgyth’s native Wessex for scientific tests to fully confirm her identity.

Excerpt: The crumbling remains of Alfred the Great’s granddaughter – a Saxon princess who married one of the most powerful men in Europe – have been unearthed more than 1,000 years after her death. The almost intact bones of Queen Eadgyth – the early English form of Edith – were discovered wrapped in silk, inside a lead coffin in a German cathedral. Eadgyth – one of the oldest members of the English royal family – was given in marriage to the influential Holy Roman Emperor Otto I and lived in Germany until her death in 946AD, aged 36.

When the tomb was opened in 2008 a lead coffin 70cm long was found inside,  bearing an inscription that read: ‘The rescued remains of Queen Eadgyth are in  this sarcophagus, after the second renovation of this monument in 1510.’ The  lead box contained the bones of a woman aged in her thirties, wrapped in white silk.

Emperor Otto I

Emperor Otto I was the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, reigning from 936 until his death in 973. The oldest son of Henry I the Fowler and Matilda of Ringelheim, Otto was the first of the Germans* to be called the “Emperor of Italy”.

Emperor Otto inherited the Duchy of Saxony and the kingship of the Germans upon his father’s death in 936. He continued his fathers’ work to unify all German tribes into a single kingdom and greatly expanded the king’s powers at the expense of the aristocracy. Through strategic marriages and personal appointments, Otto installed members of his own family to the kingdom’s most important duchies. This reduced the various dukes into royal subjects under his authority.

Otto’s later years were marked by conflicts with the Papacy and struggles to stabilize his rule over Italy. Otto finally returned to Germany in August 972 and died of natural causes in 973. Otto II succeeded him as Emperor.

(*Note: There is a difference between today’s German (Germanic Race) and the Ancient Germans.)

A Question of Heritage

Just whose image is being portrayed here? (Right, Emperor Otto I)? The monument, in Magdeburg (Germany) states:
The Magdeburger Reiter: A tinted sandstone equestrian monument, c. 1240, traditionally intended as a portrait of Otto I, Magdeburg

So from the above inscription, the use of  “tinted” sandstone and “traditionally intended”; are we to assume the monument is a mere representation and not an exact likeness?

One commenter writes: “I have been studying ancient German history, which is of great interest to me since most of my ancestors came from Germany. Yet I can find hardly anything back beyond the era of Teutoburg, 09 AD . Can anyone tell me about the German tribes any time up until Teutoburg? For instance, circa 700 / 600 BC, from whence did the tribes come before settling in Germany? I love my heritage very much and would love to know the earliest of my origins as possible!”

Solidifying the Lie

Did you know Pretender was a very REAL and legal term used off and on since the 3rd Century? What I found most interesting is the definition of the word itself:

A pretender is one who claims entitlement to an unavailable position of honour or rank. Most often it refers to a former monarch, or descendant thereof, whose throne is occupied or claimed by a rival, or has been abolished.

Although “claimant” is sometimes preferred, the term in itself is not pejorative. The original meaning of the English word pretend, means “to put forward, to profess or claim”; this predates today’s more common English meaning of “pretend”, which is to claim falsely.

The term “pretender” applies not only to claimants with arguably genuine rights to the throne (as the various pretenders of the Wars of the Roses) who regarded the de facto monarch as a usurper, but also to impostors with wholly fabricated claims (as pretenders to Henry VII’s throne Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck). People in the latter category often assume the identities of deceased or missing royalty, and are sometimes referred to for clarity as false pretenders or royal impersonators. A Papal pretender is called an Antipope.

Well if you thought that was interesting, look at this:

In Prussian history (Original Germany /Holy Roman Empire), Junkers were members of the landed nobility in Prussia. They owned great estates that were maintained and worked by Slavic peasants with few rights.They were a dominant factor in the Prussian History; and again after 1871, German military, political and diplomatic leadership.

[Sidenote: notice the break in his-story, where it says, “Prussian History, and again after 1871”. You will come to see this sort of gap many times again; and often around the same time period.]

Word Origin

Junker is derived from Middle High German Juncherre, meaning “young nobleman” or otherwise “young lord” (derivation of jung and Herr), and originally was the title of members of the higher edelfrei (immediate) nobility without or before the accolade. [However] It evolved to a general denotation of a young or lesser noble, often poor and politically insignificant, understood as “country squire” A good number of poorer Junkers took up careers as soldiers, mercenaries and officials [starting to see the trend here?] at the court of territorial Princes. These families were mostly part of the German medieval unsubstantiated nobles; who carried on the colonization and Christianization of the northeastern European territories. Over the centuries, they had become influential commanders and landowners.

Looking a little further into the definition of Landed nobility it reads:

Landed Nobility is a category of nobility in various countries over the history, for which landownership was part of their noble privileges. Their character depends on the country.

Ummm….”their character depends on the country.”   That would seem to suggest, after seizing the land, they would then claim to be the original landowners and “adopt” the persona of the original habitants.

And Finally…

These false heirs do not resemble, even a little, their implied progenitors. They claim to be descendants from Ancient Egypt, yet they do not look like them either!

Locking someone  in a dungeon (or basement), imprisoning them for years (Queen Mary of Scots), or keeping them on house arrest (Queen Lili’uokalani of Hawaii) while you tap into their bloodline draining their essence, does not constitute an heir apparent; but an apparent murderer and creature that rules by deception.
